Khusus di masa pandemi Covid-19 seperti sekarang ini, MTV VMAs memberikan dua kategori baru yaitu Best Music Video from
Home dan Best Quarantine Performance.
Nama Lady Gaga dan Ariana Grande
mendominasi tahun ini. Keduanya mendapat sembilan nominasi untuk album terbaru
mereka serta kolaborasinya mereka yang berjudul Rain on Me. Lady Gaga memborong
lima penghargaan di kategori Artist of The Year, Song of The Year, Best
Collaboration, Best Cinematography dan penghargaan khusus Tricon Award. Pemilik
lagu Poker Face tersebut menerima TriCon Award pertama untuk menghormati karirnya
sebagai musisi, aktris, filantropis dan aktivis.
